Free Africa

A global call to the Poets
Dear poets from all over the world ;
Our world is experiencing a wave of human rights violations globally, especially on the African continent. It is time we stand for our freedom, for autodetermination and human rights. Our power, as poets, is the poetic word that changes the vision of the world and opens new horizons for the future.

It is on this premise that WPM Africa proposes to initiate a poetic event for the motherland with a theme about the protection of all human rights in Africa.

All are invited to add to the vision of the production and to participate in the call out to other poets in your countries.

It’s up to you, dear poets, to offer your power of imagination for mother Africa, the cradle of humanity, lest the world feign to forget.

It is our call for freedom and human rights, against war, hegemonies, violence, exploitation, injustice, marginalization.
It is a call for life for all humanity.

Nature of the activity: online and face to face poetic readings

Motto : Free Africa

CONTEXT
Africa, ongoing struggle

By Siphiwe Nzima

Friends, as we reflect on the liberation of African nations, let us pause to applaud the immense courage, determination, and resilience of the African people. Let us commemorate their victories, but not forget the struggles that still lie ahead. By standing hand in hand, with unwavering solidarity and compassion, we can forge a future where all African countries thrive, free from the shadows of colonization and political unrest.

Act Now

Africa is the mother of continents and civilisations, the mother of poetry, dance and music. We owe her all our recognition, our love and our fraternal and strong solidarity, at this time when her peoples take up the path of struggle against colonialism.

The International Coordinating Committee of the World Poetry Movement (WPM) invites all poets and artists of the world to develop a large-scale mass action to draw the world’s attention to the continuing violations of human rights on the African continent and the need for international bodies, especially the United Nations, the European Union and the African Union to take note of this painful and continuing circumstance and to apply the necessary correctives and sanctions to defend the right to life and the fundamental rights of the peoples of Africa.

We call on poets and artists around the world to organise face-to-face and virtual events between 21-30 September, with the presence of African poets, online events, including readings of poems by African poets, and contextualisation of the acts of violation of fundamental rights currently taking place in Africa.

Please confirm as soon as possible your active participation through the different social networks of the World Poetry Movement.
